Because of the emotions that are triggered, any objective analysis that would otherwise be deployed is now pushed aside in favor of accommodating the person who’s apparently being subjugated by an abusive system.<\/p>\n
When you say you’re in pain, because people assume that you’ve been hurt by something or someone other than yourself, they’re not going to ask what you’ve done to yourself. Rather, they’re going to ask what happened to you and, should you have a response that sounds like that of a victim, your perspective is rarely evaluated as much as its immediately accommodated.<\/p>\n
In other words, by sounding like you need help, you can avoid being held responsible for your actions.<\/p>\n
Take the phrase, “I’m not hurting anyone.”<\/p>\n
A lot of times you hear that statement made in the context of someone who wants to insist that what they’re doing is harmless, even if others see it as problematic.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, it’s a valid point.<\/p>\n
There are occasions when you’re being evaluated in a way that is overly critical.<\/p>\n
But there are other times that it’s used to conceal a mindset that says if it doesn’t both me, it shouldn’t bother anyone else and if it does, they don’t matter.<\/p>\n
For example, Homosexuality. When a homosexual tries to justify their lifestyle by saying that they’re not hurting anyone, do they have a point? Are homosexuals “not dangers to society” and is homosexuality “compatible with full health”?<\/p>\n
To answer these questions 4,340 adult respondents drawn via area probability sampling from 5 metropolitan areas of the USA self-administered an extensive sexuality\/public order questionnaire of over 500 items. Bisexuals and homosexuals (about 4% of the sample) as compared to heterosexuals:<\/p>\n
From the standpoints of individual health, public health and social order, participating in homosexual activity could be viewed as dangerous to society and incompatible with full health.
